Pisum sativum Google logo!

July 19, 2011 at 22:51 MDT

Today's Google logo, in honor of the July 20 birthday of Gregor Mendel, is constructed of the pods of Pisum sativum (garden pea). Mendel's careful experiments and observations helped found the discipline we now know as Genetics. G and Y in the image indicate the wrinkly green and smooth yellow pea phenotypes Mendel observed in his cross-breeding experiments.

For Pisum sativum at LIS, see http://pea.comparative-legumes.org, and for a nice introduction to Mendelian genetics,  Gregor Mendel and the principles of inheritance. Nature Education 2008;1(1) by Ilona Miko.
